La Paz Kayaking Adventure: Mangroves & Malecón

Join us for a half-day kayaking adventure that takes you through some of La Paz’s most beautiful coastal scenery! We meet right on the beach in front of Hotel Marea, where your guide will give you a quick briefing before we launch into the calm waters of the bay.

We’ll paddle across to El Mogote, a stunning stretch of coastline lined with peaceful mangroves, home to a variety of birds and marine life. We’ll follow the shoreline, enjoying the tranquil views, and make a stop at one of Mogote’s remote beaches to take a break, stretch your legs, and enjoy a light snack.

After some time to relax, we hop back into the kayaks and begin the final stretch of the journey, crossing back over the bay to paddle along La Paz’s iconic Malecón. It’s a great contrast to the wild beauty of the mangroves—colorful, vibrant, and full of local life.

We finish back where we started, at the beach by Hotel Marea. The entire trip lasts between 3 to 5 hours, depending on the group’s pace, experience level, and the exact route taken.

Whether you’re new to kayaking or an experienced paddler, this is a great way to see La Paz from a new perspective!

Swimming with Whale Sharks

In the warm, crystal-clear waters just minutes from La Paz lies one of the most intact ecosystems in the world. Get ready to be inspired! Near El Mogote’s sand spit, the outer bay serves as a whale shark nursery, where you can observe and swim with the biggest fish in the ocean! Whale sharks are filter-feeding carpet sharks that reach a length of 62 feet / 19 meters and may live even longer than humans.

Your expert naturalist guide and professional boat captain both have received specialized training and are certified to facilitate responsible encounters that respect the animals’ habitat and feeding patterns.

A Day Exploring the Sea of Cortez

Just off the coast of La Paz, Espiritu Santo is the crown jewel of the Sea of Cortez and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Espiritu Santo has the most intact ecosystem in the region — and several of its plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world!

Using the island as a base, you can design your ideal day in paradise: kayaking or paddle-boarding, hiking desert canyons, snorkeling, and diving with playful California sea lions and schools of tropical fish. Or, simply relax on the beach with a cold drink and a good book in hand. You will also enjoy delicious catered snacks prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Baja Expeditions’ founder Tim Means, together with a supportive community, played an instrumental role in the designation of the island archipelago as a protected area. Thus, supporting the health of its ecosystems and creating opportunities for responsible access and visitation for future generations of locals and visitors.

Diving Famous Gordo Banks – the best dive around Cabo San Lucas

Gordo Banks is famous for sure. The holy grail of diving for Cabo divers, Gordo Banks is an underwater ridge with a series of pinnacles starting at a depth of 100 feet. It’s not a dive for the fainthearted unless they want to go with their own personal dive guide (which of course is no problem). Visibility in shallower water can be murky. There can be current. So why bother?? Because it’s the best reef in the area for seeing sharks, rays, jacks, turtles and large schools of smaller fish…. If you are really lucky you might even spot marlin, whale sharks, silky sharks, or schooling hammerheads. Divers have even encountered humpback whales between January and April!

You will have absolutely no problem if you are experienced enough to be able to jump in the water and hold your position near the descent line by finning against the light current. And then follow the descent line down. And have good buoyancy control and able to do a mid-water safety stop at 15 – 20 feet for 3 minutes on the way back up. That’s it!! Basic boat diving skills. And then we are off to get a couple of dives in and keep our fingers crossed for big critters. All divers have to stay with their dive guide unless prior arrangements have been made at the time of booking. Divers also need to be equipped with an SMB, dive alert signalling horn, and Nautilus Lifeline Marine Rescue GPS. If you don’t have all this gear (and we think everyone should!), we are happy to loan you what you need or if you prefer, you can purchase gear at competitive prices.

Do you want to do Gordo Banks but not sure if you have the skills yet?

No worries!!   Our staff will be pleased to work with you ahead of time on some local boat dives for a day, 2 days, 3 days, or whatever it takes to get you comfortable and ready.   Is it worth it??  Heck yes!!!   This is a dive we never miss ourselves when we take a day off !!

Gordo Banks is 8 miles – 25 minutes – from where we berth our dive boats in Cabo San Lucas.  We depart daily, weather permitting.

Best visibility is usually from September to December, but it’s always worth a visit!

About Cabo San Lucas Diving

Experience the best of our local diving, whether it’s Cabo San Lucas Marine Park or a longer 30-minute ride out to the Corridor. We’ll take you to wherever the visibility and animals are best that day.

Cabo San Lucas dive sites border a wall with a drop-off to more than 300ft/100m. This proximity to deep water is what fuels the diversity of marine life. This is where your adventure begins!

Notes from our in-house marine biologist: It’s possible to see sea lions, white tip reef sharks, groups of mobulas (in-season), and huge schools of snappers and jacks. Plus a variety of eels, octopus, lobster, and even sea horses in the Cabo San Lucas Marine Park.

Diving out at the Corridor is a more tranquil experience, and you could see eagle rays, schools of machete, Cortez grunts, mobula rays, eels, and much more. Highlight: hearing singing humpback whales during your dive (Dec – April).

Whale Watching Adventure

Every year, from December until April, we have beautiful cetaceans migrating down to the Baja, Mexico. Be part of the exciting migration of humpback whales seen here in Cabo San Lucas!

They are coming home to breed and birth their young. Where do they come from? How long is their migration? Do they travel in pods or solo? What is their behaviour and why? How old do they get? How big are they? And so many more questions…

Join one of our whale watching trips and discover all this and more! You might even fall in love.

Ready for an Amazing Cabo Adventure?

We feel privileged to have all these wonderful creatures swimming in the ocean within reach. The migration will bring humpback whales back into the Cabo San Lucas area from early December… And we can’t wait to introduce them to you! Book your Whale Experience now.

About the Whale Watching Experience

We offer 2.5 hr trips. Our guides can tell you all there is to know about whales and love answering questions, too. With our hydrophone, you’ll have a chance to even hear them.

During the season, you can see humpback whales up close, in their element. There are few things more majestic than a 40-ton whale launching itself completely clear of the water or as heartwarming as watching a mother and her newborn calf at play. Get on board and be amazed.

What to bring: sun protection, hat, towel, and light jacket  – it can feel chilly in the ocean breeze even if it’s hot on land.

San Ignacio + Expedition Yacht

This is a fabulous peak whale season adventure, combining 3 nights voyaging up towards Loreto National Park seeking out blue and humpback mommas and babies on our 116 ft expedition yacht, with a boutique hotel stay in La Paz.

Enjoy humpback whale watching in Cabo, visit the UNESCO Isla Espíritu Santo, snorkel with sea lions, and take a private flight into our luxury camp at San Ignacio Lagoon for the most extraordinary whale interaction on the planet.

8 Days / 7 Nt
From $5,095 pp.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 – Whale Watching and Central La Paz!

Humpback whale watching adventure in Cabo, accompanied by your own personal naturalist, who will guide you throughout your entire trip. Afternoon transfer to a boutique hotel on a quiet beach in La Paz.

Days 2-4 – Whales Whales Whales

Let’s go and have some fun, heading out to UNESCO Isla Espíritu Santo to snorkel with sea lions, explore, and a beach lunch. Late afternoon transfer to our 116 ft expedition yacht to head north towards Loreto National Park to search out blue and humpback momma and baby whales, dolphins, and fin back whales. Supported by our observation airplane. There should be time for kayaking, nature walks, and on one special evening, cocktails on the beach while watching a sunset.

Day 5 – San Ignacio!

Morning flight to San Ignacio for the most extraordinary whale interaction on the planet.

Our staff will be waiting to meet you at the airstrip with welcoming smiles, glasses of champagne, and hot apple cider, followed by a 5 minute ride to camp. Once there, enjoy brunch, a welcome briefing, and a naturalist introduction to the whales and what you might see and experience this afternoon. We recommend heading out for two afternoon whale-watching encounters, but of course, it’s always your option to stay and relax at camp or try some of our other activities. In the evening, enjoy cocktail hour and watch the sunset around one of our fire pits, followed by dinner and a presentation by one of our naturalists.

Days 6-7 – San Ignacio Lagoon Gray Whales

All operators in the lagoon work together to maximize guest experience while ensuring no negative impact on the whales. For this reason, all whale encounters are in a small defined area of the lagoon with pangas taking turns entering the restricted area for a maximum of 90 minutes. The timing on this is worked out between the operators which means that we abide by scheduled departure times. For this reason, unfortunately, we are not able to send pangas out “on demand”. The departure times are defined.

Option 1:
7 am breakfast after watching the sunrise over the sierras and then head out at 7:45 am for several whale watching encounters

Option 2:
Sleep in and relax. Breakfast when you are ready. With a fixed departure time of 9:45 am, if you want to join the second whale watching session of the day. The second round is around 10 to 10:30 am, depending on the availability in the area for whale watching, and then back to camp for lunch.

After lunch, enjoy another whale-watching encounter in the afternoon. Or as long as the weather cooperates, enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding in the mangroves on the other side of the lagoon, or a leisurely walk, visit a local village to experience and learn about their turtle conservation efforts, mountain biking, hiking, and bird watching with one of our naturalists or just kicking back, and relax at camp. In the evening, enjoying cocktail hour, sunset viewing, making new friends around one of our fire pits, a game of billiards, or an evening presentation by a naturalist are all fine ways to finish off your day in camp.

Day 8 – Return to Cabo

Breakfast at 7 am. One more whale watching encounter (always weather dependent), and then the beautiful flight back to SJD Los Cabos, arriving by 1:30 pm. If you are flying home this day, we recommend booking a return flight after 3:30 pm. Otherwise transfer back to SeeCreatures Cabo for more adventure!

More days. More adventure. Options from 8 to 12 days in Baja.
