“We had an amazing time at this camp! Yilmar and Noe were our guides on the whale watching boat, and I can’t imagine a better team. Yilmar was fun, knowledgeable, professional and Noe was a terrific boat captain. Together, these Whale Whisperers brought us amazing whale experiences each day. Our massage therapist, Alma, was fantastic, and a very special and unique therapist. We loved the presentations, the food offered by Nubia and Hugo, and the kitchen was well prepared in a cheery, beautiful space. Thank you Baja Expeditions for a truly inspiring vacation.”

“We had an amazing time in San Ignacio! Thank you for an incredible experience that will always be cherished. Alberto was the best guide. I learned so much about our beautiful friends, the Pacific Gray Whale. The evening seminars were educational and fun. The drinks and snacks were the best way to end a busy day of whale watching. Thank you for the comfortable and clean accommodations with all the amenities we could ever imagine. It was glamping indeed! And of course the food. Wow! We were impressed with the selection of food and drinks. Such welcome service. We will always remember our time here. Best part…getting snotted by whales. YAY!!!!”

“Everything from the minute we entered Sea Creatures in Cabo was spectacular. Super easy check in and instructions on what is required of us. The short plane ride had amazing site views. Upon arriving at camp, the staff were extremely friendly and informative. The guides (Alberto) and panga Captain (Noe) were fantastic. A huge amount of information about Grey Whales and other sea life was provided to us by Alberto. We saw lots of whales every day and had some extremely close personal encounters with the whales. We also saw many, many dolphins, turtles and other sea life. The food and staff are top notch. You never go hungry! One of the greatest adventure trips I have ever been on!

“This was the trip of a lifetime! The staff were all super helpful, knowledgable and very fun! Alberto was especially loaded with information and had a very engaging delivery! It was super special in every way! Thank you so much!

Today was a great day at San Ignacio Lagoon! One of the guest asked me if gray whales jump, I told him a little about it but he was still incredulous. A few minutes later, as if answering his question, a whale breached. We saw it at distance but it was like the whale said “look at me, I can jump too” it was incredible. We all laughed.

We interacted with many whales, we saw many spy hops. We also saw one whale that breached 5 times! The guests enjoyed the day – the lagoon gave us a sunny day with a calmer sea.

During one sighting of the day, we saw several spy hops and we also saw a whale that we have been seeing for about 3 weeks in the lagoon, its name is Tigresa. She is very easy to identify because it has a very white head and some scratch-like marks on its body. Whenever we see it, it exhibits a behavior of scratching itself on the bottom because the moment it comes out into the water a yellow spot of sand is seen.

Chavalo’s Lagoon https://bajaex.com/blogs/san-ignacio/chavalos-lagoon/ https://bajaex.com/blogs/san-ignacio/chavalos-lagoon/#respond Sun, 16 Feb 2025 01:48:00 +0000 https://bajaex.com/?p=217482 Chavalo’s wisdom is proof that conservation isn’t just about rules—it’s about respecting the natural flow of the lagoon.

He doesn’t need a GPS. The tide, the wind, the whales themselves—Chavalo reads them all like an old book. He’s been on these waters longer than most of us have been alive, and his stories stretch as far as the horizon.

He remembers a time before regulations when boats would rush toward whales without thinking about the impact. Over the years, he’s learned to recognize the whales’ rhythms—the moments when they are resting, socializing, or simply passing through. With patience and respect, he positions the boat carefully, always giving them space, never forcing an interaction. His approach isn’t about getting close; it’s about understanding when to observe and when to move on.

Chavalo’s wisdom is proof that conservation isn’t just about rules—it’s about respecting the natural flow of the lagoon. The more we listen to those who have spent a lifetime here, the better we can protect this place and the whales that call it home.

Working as a Guide in Laguna San Ignacio has been one of the most enriching and unique experiences of my life. This corner of Baja California Sur, considered one of the most impressive natural sanctuaries on the planet, is not only a place full of history but also teeming with wildlife that takes your breath away. It’s a privilege to be back in this place, and yesterday was my first time this season I went out to sea again.

My heart was filled with joy as I saw the gray whales once more, because being a Guide here is an experience that goes beyond just work. It’s a calling to witness one of nature’s most amazing events: the migration and birth of the gray whales in one of the most remote locations. Every day, as I’m on the lagoon, I can’t help but feel grateful to be part of something so incredibly magnificent, and I can’t wait to see how the whales will surprise us this year.
